Gudi Padva - Happy New Year

There wouldn't be a better day to start blogging than on the first day of the year. Gudi Padva is widely celebrated in Maharashtra & Goa as the first day of the new year.  This year is my first Padva as a married man & my wife began this year with a bang with some awesome Carrot Halva. It really set me up for the coming year. My wify is one of the best cooks that I have come across and her style of cooking is my favorite, less masala, very simple style of cooking and delicious. She cooks Indian food the way you would have European food & I am now looking forward for a delicious culinary year ahead.

The new year began with the delicious Carrot Halwa and then proceeded with reading the local news paper and when you read that a new Monginis store is opening in the neighborhood you realize the world around you is fine at least till the borders of Goa. Goa being a very small state with a small population you end up having newspapers with headlines of store openings and robberies and thefts and so on.  Goans do not like to read about national and international news. The hot topic that sells here is about a new store opened, a new bus service launched, the local football matches, a theft or robbery etc. 

On the auspicious day of this new year there are 2 new stores opening in our village and there are 2 different state ministers coming for its opening that is when I realize that our village is getting more prominent in the map of Goa. We have international brands and more store opening up here. 

Our quaint village is located ideally @5 Km from Panjim (the capital), 4 Km from Mapusa (a city with the wholesale bazzar) and 6 Km from Calangute (the most important beach belt for tourists). With the development of these places around us our sleepy little village is getting more attention because of its location.

    feels grt to see u write...i read jinu sir's blogs in gmail, he is an awsome writer ...i just love reading his blogs..and remember his giggling laughs of those college touring days... i have never seen u laugh so heartily anytime but for sure i have seen archana speaking about u so much with that sweet blush she had in her smile wen she spoke about u...heheheanyways keep writing ..thats a greatest asset that a person has ...all the best i am in ....in to ur blog fan club

    The first comment on my blog, feels great, Jinu is gifted, his oratory & writing skills are very good. I also follow his bolg. Hopefully I will also be able to capture my feelings & expressions of my travel in words.

There is only 1 Goa in India

 Goa first came on the tourist map in the 60's as a hippie haven, probably the golden era of tourism in this tiny state. The tourists were more sensitive towards local culture and the environment. They consumed less and were happy living the life of the locals.  When the benefits of liberalisation started to trickle down and when a new and ambitious middle class started travelling, Goa witnessed mass tourism in the 90's and 2000's. There was a sudden surge of investments, construction and development, the era of unplanned tourism growth. Everyone wanted to be in Goa and everyone wanted to invest here.  The result of this era is what we experience in Goa of today, the relaxed vibe gave way to environmental degradation, overcrowding and cultural commodification, everything that this sunny seaside state was not known for.  Yet there is only 1 Goa in India and tourists still come here in hordes to experience the beaches, architecture, cuisine and the Goan vibe.  Whe...

Pondy without its soul

I am a firm believer that magic created in certain destinations should not be replicated else where. With magic I mostly refer to food. For example, I would never order a Goan fish curry and rice outside Goa, similarly there are many street food joints in Goa that are known for Wada - Pav but I have never had the courage to have them there. Some how Wada - Pav is synonymous to Mumbai and how ever good the taste it is not complete without having it on a busy road in Mumbai, with lots of crowd, noise, honking and chaos. Certain dishes and delicacies are complete only at certain locales. In our annual visit to Kerala (our home town) the early morning's I look forward to Kattan Kappi (Black Coffee) also known just as "Kattan". Some how the urge to have them never kicks inn while at home in Goa or Mumbai. It is not all about the coffee but the whole package of having a hot glass of kattan while watching elders reading Malayalam Manorama and discussing the news in the thinna...
