When your job ruins an Avenger movie for you

A group of teenagers are on a college tour accompanied by their teachers. They travel through Paris and Vienna. Sounds very interesting particulary when one of the teenager is our friendly neighbourhood Spider Man. This was the narrative of the latest Avenger movie that we watched. It was all good and we were looking forward to a thrilling movie where the protagnist saves the World against all odds until a scenario we face on a daily basis at work features on the screen.

So this group of teenagers are traveling through Europe and they reach Vienna from Paris. All along Spidy is doing his thing and saving the World. As the group arrives at their hotel in Vienna, they are welcomed into a crumbeled and delapilated hotel. The young students are not at all pleased and they take up the griviance with their teacher. Who pacifies them and tells them that he will get a refund from the travel company.

Thats it, this scenario did it for us. We come to see movies like the Avengers to escape from the disasters at work and then we are taken back exactly there. No more scifi saving the world could get us groved back to the movie. The movie goes on and the story progresses but that connect to Spiderman is lost as we are now more invested in the travel company from whom a refund is demanded.

A unhappy guest who does not like the hotel and is demading a last minute change or a refund is a nightmare for us in the travel industry. The complications are many, hotels have strict cancelation policies and there sure is no re-fund. But the guest demands the same from the travel company.

As professionals we advise our best options which many guests overlook to save some money. Then most of the guests  do not read the terms and conditions and cancellation policies. Yes we could stay our ground and fight it out with the guests, but then things would get ugly and goes against the core of hospitality and coutesy.

Either ways you loose either money or goodwill not a pleasant situation and thanks to the writers of Spider Man, a movie that was to entertain you projects back the unpleasntness of our job on the big screen.

Anatomy of an Architectural Tour

We have been curating and planning architectural students tours over the past 2 decades and in this time the number of Architectural colleges have grown exponentially. It will be interesting to study the size of this market in terms of tours, competitors etc. We haven't come across this specific segment level analysis but we have many other learnings over time.  In this blog we try to articulate the anatomy of an Architectural tour, its different stakeholders and the impact these have in the overall experience.  Stakeholder 1 - The students Young and energetic and eager to explore, probably stepping out of the shadows of their parents and families for the first time. Their imagination of travel to a destination is derived from popular culture and Instagram. They don't know exactly what to expect but invariably these tours remain memorable for a long time.  Stakeholder 2 - The faculties and the management A destination is picked and finalised with an agenda that adds value to th

Planning, organizing and coordinating an Architectural students tour

We recently had the opportunity to organise a tour for the 7th semester students of Architecture from Manipal College. The group was travelling to Goa to case study students housing. We got on board as a travel consultant just a week before their scheduled arrival in Goa.  Some of the larger campuses in Goa are  Goa Institute of Management, designed by Ar.Brinda Somaya |  https://www.gim.ac.in/ BITS Goa campus by Ar. Hafeez Contractor |  https://www.bits-pilani.ac.in/goa/ NIT Goa New Campus, still under construction |  https://www.nitgoa.ac.in/   Within a week we had to get permissions to visit these campuses, plan the logistics and prepare a daily scheduling. 7 days may seem a lot of time to put this all together but we were under pressure because our scchedule was depended on these permissions and we were anxiously awaiting an affermative reply from the administrative department of these campuses. After all the students were traveling all the way to Goa only for these case studeis.
