Small Joys of life

Some of the small joys of life that take us through a day is the number of shares and likes our post, picture or blog get. We keep fidgeting with our phone to see if there is some new interest in what we have expressed. While sometimes this could be the reason for added misery when we do not get enough traction as well, however we cannot resist the idea of sharing with the world our stories, thoughts and feelings.

As a small business in the travel segment, the first or second point of reference is always the website. When we started off in 2003 having a website was a big deal. We got our first website up after many delays, still remember the happiness of seeing our company on the World Wide Web, there was dial up internet back then and it took like forever to load, that somehow did not matter back in the day.

As we grew in business, our website improved, the second time we made a website, it was by our friend who never charged us for the service. He was a professional and very good one at it. The look and feel and the architecture improved a lot. This was also the time of the dot.com boom. While we were happy with the aesthetical progress of our website elsewhere technologies were being designed that would transform the travel business.

Since the emergence of travel portals, offline agents like ours were being replaced by technologies, we had to stand out. We realized that our website was static and any changes that had to be done to it had to be done through a designer or a coder this took a lot of time; hence we decided to create our own site with Jhoomla. The design, look and feel of this website was very average but we had the flexibility to add and change content the way we want.

The Fourth time we changed our website we had grew our team and resources and we were more ambitious than ever before. We again approached a professional and we were very happy with the end result, Social media channels were now integrated and there were easier forms that guests could fill out for inquiries. This time the website was large with many pages.

Around us technology was changing faster than we could comprehend and travel patterns were changing. Now you can read reviews of hotels, move from point to point in uber, book hotels on multiple portals, book off beat travel experiences, flight tickets everything through Apps. Again we decided to redevelop our own website but unlike the last time we attempted it, this time there are companies like Wix and Go Daddy which help us create and design website. Their many features help us to add testimonials and get online payment etc.

Coming back to the point of small joys of life after having designed different websites at different stages, it is extremely satisfying to have some traffic on our website which we have designed ourselves. Like we keep checking if our posts and pictures are liked and reacted upon, I guess as an entrepreneur we check our phones to see if there are a few guests on our website and you can imagine our happiness when we see there is someone live on our website as we speak, this very rarely happens and we cannot not share this.

There is only 1 Goa in India

Goa first came on the tourist map in the 60's as a hippie haven, probably the golden era of tourism in this tiny state. The tourists were more sensitive towards local culture and the environment. They consumed less and were happy living the life of the locals.  When the benefits of liberalisation started to trickle down and when a new and ambitious middle class started travelling, Goa witnessed mass tourism in the 90's and 2000's. There was a sudden surge of investments, construction and development, the era of unplanned tourism growth. Everyone wanted to be in Goa and everyone wanted to invest here.  The result of this era is what we experience in Goa of today, the relaxed vibe gave way to environmental degradation, overcrowding and cultural commodification, everything that this sunny seaside state was not known for.  Yet there is only 1 Goa in India and tourists still come here in hordes to experience the beaches, architecture, cuisine and the Goan vibe.  Whe...

Pondy without its soul

I am a firm believer that magic created in certain destinations should not be replicated else where. With magic I mostly refer to food. For example, I would never order a Goan fish curry and rice outside Goa, similarly there are many street food joints in Goa that are known for Wada - Pav but I have never had the courage to have them there. Some how Wada - Pav is synonymous to Mumbai and how ever good the taste it is not complete without having it on a busy road in Mumbai, with lots of crowd, noise, honking and chaos. Certain dishes and delicacies are complete only at certain locales. In our annual visit to Kerala (our home town) the early morning's I look forward to Kattan Kappi (Black Coffee) also known just as "Kattan". Some how the urge to have them never kicks inn while at home in Goa or Mumbai. It is not all about the coffee but the whole package of having a hot glass of kattan while watching elders reading Malayalam Manorama and discussing the news in the thinna...
